Well hello there… Anyone else here a Moonie? And I don’t mean the type of person that pulls their pants down and shows their bare bums to the world for laughs, oh no… I mean a Sailor Moon fan!!!
Well I am a HUGE Sailor Moon fan and I have been since childhood. I watched the series like it was my religion, it collected all the manga comics and read them to death, I collected the dolls and grew a passion about Japan that is probably a little unhealthy. It’s on my bucket list to go there, just to experience the country and world where little Usagi would have grown up (Even if she is just a cartoon and fictional character) I even got my two little girls interested in the Moon Kingdom. I told you, it’s like a religion to me.
Back in March of this year ‘The Sailor Moon Super Live’ came to the UK and I was lucky enough to be able to go and watch it with one of my babies.
Super Live is a live performance by actresses and actors showcasing the first season of Sailor Moon but in a more cut down version to fit into a couple of hours. Now as you may or may not know I live in sunny Eastbourne down the south coast of the UK, but we had to travel to London and head to the KOKO theatre to watch this performance. And it did not disappoint and was well worth the travel time there and the wait in the queue… Although I was cheeky and bought the upgraded tickets to include a free poster each, a skip in the queue to the V.I.P section and a meet and greet where we got to high five the cast. Super amazing and super exciting.

The theatre itself ‘KOKO’ is situated in the London borough of Camden and was very quaint and full of character. The toilets were so colourful and ran underground like a weird little rabbit warren that was actually really clean and comforting when the time came to pee… LOL… TMI I know sorry about that, I have been known to share too much information… Anyways…
As we waited for the performance to start, me and my little grabbed ourselves some merch and then a much needed drink (Her a fruit juice and me a beer, I never go out and drink so this was out, out for me) Our seats were right at the front, the second row if I’m being precise but there was no one in front of our chairs so we felt like the front row.
Suddenly the lights dimmed and a countdown began… And then… the iconic theme tune began to play and everyone cheered and screamed with delight and anticipation. The stage filled with the actresses playing the staring roles of Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Mars and Sailor Venus. The crowd went wild at seeing our childhood heroines be on stage, young and old, female and male, it was pure happiness.
As they began to act out the play it was nice to see that the girls performing were sticking to their native tongue of Japanese and the whole play was done and sung in Japanese. It made it so much more realistic seen as the original series came from Japan. They did include subtitles on the screen behind them so we could at least read what was happening and know what they were saying to one another, but I found I hardly took notice of it, if you know the storyline then you know… It was just great to be in the moment.

The girls had so much energy and played their retrospective alter egos and personas so incredibly well. The girl that played Usagi/ Sailor Moon gave her fullest performance and acting out the cry baby attitude so well. Sailor Moon is known to be a bit of a cry baby and a whiner, but it wasn’t overbearing or too much, she acted it out just how Sailor Moon should be. All the other girls also gave it their all and played their characters to a ‘T’.
Mars had the right amount of sassiness, Mercury had the smarts and the shyness and was so sweet, Jupiter showed her strength and courage which is just how Lena was in the OG anime episodes and the Manga’s I used to read. And Venus… Well… She was adorable, she definitely had the spirit of the Sailor Senshi of love. She also waved to my daughter a lot and totally made our day. When it came to the audience joining in she would encourage my daughter and even gave her some confetti at the end of the performance.
Now… Sailor Moon is not just her and her friends running around and complaining about boy problems (Some of it is, they are teenagers in love after all) but, there was also the dark side, the dark side of the moon, Queen Beryl and her evil minions! The actress who played her was also amazing, she made evil look fun and gorgeous and her minions were also fantastic and completely had us fearing for Sailor Moon and her friends in a fun, cute, Sailor Moon kind of way.

The performance as a whole was brilliant and one day if I ever manage to get to Japan I would love to go and see it again. It also brought my childhood planetary princesses and heroines to life and made me remember the days of hoping to meet a talking cat that would tell me I had magical powers and would have to save the world on the daily and would get to meet her prince and fall in love. I mean, I did get to meet my prince and fall in love, and I do have a pet cat that kinda talks… But I have yet to gain my magical moon powers. Shame, I would make a damn good Sailor Guardian.
As I mentioned before we got to meet the cast after the show and we got to high five them. This was such a sweet experience for my daughter, especially as Sailor Venus remembered my daughter from the crowd and gave her an extra special squeeze. They were such lovely girls and I can’t put into words how truly amazing this experience was. You just had to be there.

This is the time I got to witness Sailor Moon and her Sailor Guardians winning love by daylight, and fighting evil by moonlight… And if you ever get the chance to see it in Japan or if it comes back to the UK, I would highly recommend going to see it if you are a dedicated Moonie or if you just want to watch something and relive your childhood years or if you are just a lover of theatre performances as this was so fun and different.

This is my merch that I got (Other than the Manga book/ comic I just took that with me for the train ride) But I got an awesome T-shirt, two postcards of my favourite ‘Sailor Moon’ and a V.I.P collectors edition ticket. I do also have a poster but that’s on the walls of my study, along with my Japanese ladies and cups that my family brought me back when they had a trip to Japan.

Well, hope you enjoyed my blog and let me know, are you a Moonie? Whose your favourite Sailor Scout?
