Book Review – The Nail Salon by Natalie Tambini…

I was gifted this book by a friend as she had already read it and thought that I might enjoy it, she actually gave me two books from this series, this one ‘The Nail Salon’ and the second one ‘The Publicist’. I have yet to read the second one, but I have to say this one had me gripped from start to finish and I couldn’t put it down, and I have to admit I’m not normally one for reading crime or police novels.

This book follows two main characters, number one being the DCI Sue Fisher who, is on a mission to solve a case about a missing girl, but as she is investigating it seems that her life is just as scary as the life of the missing child and children that she is soon to uncover. Melinda or ‘Mel’ Medford is the second main character and is the owner of a nail bar set in a pristine suburb just outside of London, where people love their image, want to keep their hair and nails up to the highest spec and scream money, wealth and designer. The blurb on the back has it down to a T, the place seems perfect, everyone that lives there seems perfect, like they are living a wealthy dream, in and out of each others pockets. Only thing is husbands and wives get bored, they begin to cheat, have affairs… Then a teenager belonging to a mum that frequents the nail salon goes missing… The mum confiding everything in her friend, her confidant, her nail technician… But the nail tech is not all as she seems, there is something dark and menacing hiding under her gloss polished nails and friendly demeanour. She knows everyone’s secrets and is not afraid to to blackmail and use it to her advantage. Even if it means putting a girls life at risk.

As DCI Fisher closes in on the kidnapper, there are many plot twists and turns that pretty much give you whiplash, and things occur and happen that you don’t see coming.

The story was very well written, and each character had depth, meaning, a background that made the events that eventually come to light so much more compelling and shocking. You have the DCI whose homelife is falling apart, she solves crimes, helps those in abusive relationships, but she does it so well because she is in an abusive relationship herself. And the plot twist with Melinda!!! Well that had me exclaiming that I never saw that one coming!!! It was… shocking!!!

I would highly recommend this book if your very into the crime and police genre of books. With its twists and turns I don’t think you would be disappointed. So, now I need to get on and read the second one in the series and see what happens to DCI Fisher and whether or not she can break free from her unfortunate situation with her homelife and horrific husband, who it seems has a few secrets of his own.

Hope you enjoyed my review. I do always try to write how I truly feel about a book but not give too much or everything away so if you do decide to read it, it still feels like a new book to you.
