The Lie Maker, something a bit different from my usual reading stomping ground of horror, thrillers, fantasy and romance… I actually purchased this book on a bit of a whim. I was at my child’s summer fair at her school and she had wondered off with her little mates to spend her pocket money on a ‘Win the cuddly toy’, game. The weather was hot and sunny, perfect book weather and lucky for me they had a stall with cheap and second hand books for sale at just 50p each! What a steal!
So as you can tell, I purchased this one, grabbed myself an ice cream from the ice cream van and sat on a bench until the end of the fair. My daughter had a wonderful time with her friends, especially since it was her last summer fair at that school (they grow up so damn fast!) and I had a wonderful time reading my book.
The book is about Jack, an author whose childhood is catching up with him. His dad was put into witness protection when Jack was young, apparently, he killed people!!! He assassinated people for a big dodgy CEO.
Jack finds himself in a predicament, he needs work and money, his books are not keeping him financially stable and no one wants his newest one. Then Gwen from witness protection offers him a lifeline, to write back stories for people in witness protection. This seems like a no brainer, plus maybe they can help him find his dad!
Whilst writing a back story for one of the witnesses in the programme he comes across something that doesn’t seem quite right, one of the witnesses is an actor on TV… very recognisable… if people really looked… the back story would be worthless… Then Gwen mentions that Jacks dad has gone missing from the programme and that it’s of a high matter of importance they find him incase he’s gone rouge again, back to his old ways, back to killing again.
Jack’s girlfriend Lana, a reporter uncovers something and is kidnapped by someone who is not who they said they were… Gwen!!! Turns out Jack’s father murdered hers and she has weaved a web of lies, deceit and deception to convince him to find his own dad for her to kill in revenge!
Jack finds his dad and they manage to briefly have a moment together, to be father and son… until Gwen and one of her cronies pulls them apart again… forever… but they at least rescue Lana and life a happy traumatised life together…

This story had me captivated until the very last page. I couldn’t help but need to read it just so I could see what would happen at the end.
I did enjoy this book a lot, I liked the twists, the turns, the unexpected betrayals and all the unexpected deaths. The only thing that I would comment on was the title is ‘The lie maker’, and it is suggested by the cover where it says ‘When you lie for a living, the truth can be deadly’… but he only writes one back story, only one potential lie for ‘witness protection’… so it kind of suggested something it wasn’t if that makes sense… I thought he actually did that job for a while… but as I read the book it does become clear why he only just starts that job and why he only does one witness protection story… but other than that, which is a minor critique of mine… the book is fantastic and well worth the read. And like I mentioned before it’s not my usual go to genre, but it made a nice change to read something out of my comfort zone.
Would I recommend this book? Yes, yes I would, especially if you love a good crime / thriller.
I hope you enjoyed my review. I always try to put some of the story but not too much I spoil it completely for if you do go and buy it. But I hope it helps you to see my opinion and what I thought of the book.
