Who doesn’t love a good film to watch to pass the time or to make time and spend it with a loved one or loved ones. Going to the local cinema used to be a favourite pastime of mine when I was younger, as I have gotten older it has become less of a thing I do now due to family commitments, money, finding a babysitter and even just finding a film that seems fun to watch or something I would be interested in.
But if I had to choose my tippy top favourite ten films / movies that would entail a bowl of salted (Yes you read that right) salted popcorn and a packet of Maltesers these would be it;
- Resident Evil – The first film based on the Capcom video game with Milla Jovovich as Alice Abernathy. I remember being obsessed when this film came out and it is by far the best one in the franchise. I have a very specific memory with this film too. I watched it one night with a babysitter that my mum had employed to be with me and my sister one night. My sister being young had gone to bed and I had begged the babysitter to watch it with me, so we did. Once finished I went to be without a care in the world. Next thing I know I wake up to a HUGE smash and crash coming from the front room. I ran down to investigate and found that a storm had blown in and had caused our living room window to collapse into the front room, right over the sofa / arm chair where myself and the babysitter had been sitting just an hour or so before!!! But what makes it stick in my mind more is that whilst sleeping and dreaming I heard the horrific crash sound, and I honestly though Nemesis, a monster from the Resident Evil franchise had found my house and had smashed through the window to get inside!!! So, whilst I love the film for its gore, it’s lore to the original game series and the bloody zombies that rampage the Hive, the underground Umbrella lab and Alice who is totally kickass… I also remember Nemesis trying to come and get me and actually how close me and my babysitter were to being injured in a freak, storm induced accident!!!
- Disney’s Atlantis – This Disney masterpiece is so underrated and I feel it should get so much more love then it does. Not only is it more inclusive with its characters, especially at a time when Disney was not trying so hard to be inclusive, it was just kind of done more naturally and with more creative and better cartoon features. It also had a great storyline and showed the greediness of mankind and at what lengths they will go to for money. The main character of Milo is such a sweet, geek like nerd but becomes the hero for his bravery in not accepting what the bad guys want and is willing to protect a group of people he never knew existed. And then there is Princess Kida!!! My favourite Disney Princess who gets little to no acknowledgement and is totally badass.
- The Hunger Games – Of course based on the book by Suzanne Collins, but I loved the books and then I loved the films. The darkness behind the theme of the story and the portrayal of Katniss by Jennifer Lawrence is just perfection. Sometimes when books are adapted to film they lose the story or the vibe of the book by choosing the wrong actor / actress to play the main character. But with the Hunger Games I feel their casting was brilliant and even the keeping and the changes they made from the book is in keeping with the story. I definitely think Jennifer Lawrences portrayal will keep the film loved by generations to come.
- Tomb Raider – The one with Angelina Jolie. The OG. I love, love, love this film. Yes it is another video game adaption, but Angelina Jolie played the part so damn well!!! She was literally Lara Croft reincarnated and had the right amount of sass and whit to make it believable. I really enjoyed the locations in this film, with the tombs, the settings, the artifacts and the home of Lara Croft… Croft Manor. I also loved the music they chose in this film and I used to have the soundtrack. There was just something about it that brings me back to my childhood.
- The Girl with all the Gifts – A classic zombie horror based on a book by Mike Carey. A post apocalyptic world where a fungal disease took over basically turning people into zombies. But, there is a twist, there are kids. So the kids are infected and are being taught in a military like classroom and being experimented on to see if they can get rid of the disease because these children show notable human like qualities, especially a little girl. The main character a young girl Melanie, is indeed infected but has to help when the camp is initially overrun by the other infected or otherwise known as ‘The Hungries’. This film and stories kind of studies whether the infected children are just that, infected zombies, or whether they are evolving. It is a great horror and one that just gives you chills.
- 28 Days Later – The OG British Zombie film (There may have been others before, but this one is just pure terrifying genius and was the first British zombie horror film I was introduced to). This film follows a man, Jim who wakes up from a coma like state in hospital to find the world has gone to crap with a zombie virus. But what makes this film even more scary is the realism. The zombies are not the dead come back to life, but humans infected with a rage virus that was being experimented on Monkeys and which escaped during an animal rights protest when they infiltrated the lab, turning the UK into a violent, flesh eating Populus. The music also makes for huge jump scares and makes your heart pound in your chest, one of the songs lives with me forever as being one of the scariest zombies songs (In the house, in a heartbeat) if I hear it I’m instantly transported there and feel like I need to run lol. The story follows Jim as he finds other survivors, some nice, some not so nice and as they try to survive and live out the rage infected.
- Twilight – Another film originally a book this time by Stephanie Meyer, and I know this one gets a lock of stink for being a bit… Naff. But, I just can’t help but like it. I grew up with it, it came out when I was about 18, I read the books and loved them and I just can’t help but like the film. Plus another reason I like it so much is the movie soundtrack, I am a bit of a sucker for a good movie soundtrack.
- Carrie – Oh wow another book that was turned into a film!!! This time by Stephen King. I’m seriously sensing a theme here lol. I seem to like films that are adapted from books. I actually really like both the old version of the film and the newer version. I like the whole girl gets revenge on her bullies theme, it just makes it better when you have been bullied your whole life to maybe one day get Telekinesis and be able to murder them all… Mwhahahaha… Only joking… Or am I lol.
- The One – With Jet Li. This film was so good for the time it came out back in 2001, its science concepts were very out there and mind bending. An Agent of the ‘Multiverse’ Police goes rogue, travelling to the different multi-verses to murder his other selves to gain immortality and to become ‘The One’. With each version of himself he kills he gains their skills and becomes stronger, what he doesn’t anticipate is the other version of himself, the last one he needs to kill has also gained super speed, skill and strength and will not go down without a fight. I love the whole multi-dimensional universe and the whole travelling by wormhole and the space talk, sided along with Kung-Fu from Jet Li himself.
- The Net with Sandra Bullock – The rise of the internet and computers was upon us, and this film that was made in 1995 was definitely on to something when they made the plot for this film of hackers being able to scam and wipe out someone’s existence and identify with the tap of a button… or Floppy disc in this case. Sandra plays a computer analyst called Angela Bennett, who stumbles across a cyber-terrorist plot and is subsequently hunted down by them. She must go on the run and find a way to clear her name. Such an old film and the technologies now would be considered so out of date, but it has always stuck with me as a fantastic film.
So, there you have it, my top ten favourite films!!! What are yours? Do you like or agree with any of mine? Let me know.
