Meet Kayella Kennedy – My main character from my book ‘Death’s Carousel’…

Today’s blog post is all about Kayella!!! Kayella is the main character in my story ‘Death’s Carousel’. She is the mastermind behind the deathly lullabies and the kidnap and murders that occur at the fairground, where the deathly Carousel sits, waiting and decaying.

Kayella is a pretty girl who as a child was so painfully shy due to her family circumstances, and due to being poor and not having the best upbringing she was bullied relentlessly. Her mum was an alcoholic and drug addict, and her dad, whilst dabbled in it, left them both for another woman and abandoned Kayella because she was a girl and not a boy. Her mum passed away from alcoholism and she ended up living with her grandma who was ill herself with dementia. Because of her nan’s dementia Kayella was sometimes left without food or water, they never had any heating or hot water due to the nan forgetting to pay the bills and Kayella ended up eventually becoming her carer, even though she was just a child herself, and so she got herself a little job to help.

The bullies at the school though didn’t care about her home life or how bad it was. All they saw was a freaky girl with greasy hair, unclean clothes, clothes that were hand me downs from a cousin and who was deathly pale and too skinny.

The bullies hounded her, and bullied her in ways that were terrible. They pulled her hair, stuck pins in her chair, they super glued her hands to a supermarket trolley, they posted fake nude photos around the school of her, they taunted her with horrible names, they flushed her head down the toilet, they tied her to a fairground ride, they fed her maggot filled food, they stalked her, harassed her, and even hurt her, to the point it ruined a hobby and potential career route she had wanted to pursue… But they could never take away her voice… Her sweet, melodic, angelic, voice… And her need for revenge.

They twisted her and tormented her until all the goodness seeped out of her and she became the one that wanted to have fun and revenge, revenge that ended up being all the fun at the fair.

But, let’s get to know Kayella a little better shall we… she’s taken the time away from murdering her bullies to join us today; (Fictitiously speaking)

Piper – Hi Kayella, so lovely to see you again.

Kayella – Thanks for having me. I hope I’m not still stuck in your head? Or is there more to come? More to murder? More revenege?

Piper – Oh, your story is so not done yet Kayella, there is so much more to come. But less about me and what I write about you, let’s get to know you shall we?

Kayella – Sure, why the hell not.

Piper – Did you always see yourself being a murderer? A serial killer of sorts? A woman who murders for revenge?

Kayella – No, when I was younger I wanted to be a fashion designer, I wanted to design bespoke fashion pieces and create them with my hands. I loved watching models strut down the catwalk, wearing the newest collection pieces from a designers AW collection or a SS collection. I never had nice clothes growing up, they were always hand me downs from my larger than me cousin, so nothing fitted nicely or was my style. So, I wanted to create my style! But a freak accident caused me to no longer be able to use a sewing machine or sew by hand. I was devastated. But even though someone caused that accident to happen to me, I never thought about revenge then, not yet anyway.

Piper – Was it hard growing up poor and being a young carer?

Kayella – You have no idea. My poor nanna was so ill with dementia, forgetting who I was, that I was there, and forgetting to buy food for us both. But she always remembered her night-night juice lol. Sometimes she would remember things, for some reason my singing triggered memories at times, she would listen to me sing and remember I had a signing lesson. And caring for her was hard, I had no access to money, so sometimes I would have to visit a foodbank sort of place to ask for food. She had money in the bank but I had no means to get at it. What made it worse was seeing all the other kids with their so called happy families living happy lives, the other girls my age were going out shopping, partying, dating hot guys and yet I was helping to wash my nanna, making sure she didn’t wander the streets at night, and making sure she didn’t hurt herself. It was hard… It was exhausting…

Piper – Did you have any friends? At all growing up?

Kayella – (She rolls her eyes and scoffs) I had two so called friends growing up. I was at a playpark once, getting some air, playing by myself on the swings and slide, when a young blonde girl called Nancy asked me if I wanted to go play. I agreed, and for a long while, she was my friend. Her mum made sure I had a hot meal at least a few times a week, and she tried to give me Nancy’s old clothes when she grew out of them. Then at high school we met Marielle, a sweet looking girl, with a bad ass big brother. Me, Nancy and Marielle became the best of friends… That was until Nancy took a shine to Queen Bitch, Leanne!!! And then eventually both Nancy and Marielle left me for Lee… and they too became my bullies.

Piper – That is so sad. What advice would you give to anyone being bullied right now?

Kayella – To not do what I did. To store all the anger and the hurt inside, to let the pain spill over and turn you into a monster. The best advice I can give is to tell someone, anyone what is going on, be it a therapist, a teacher, a family member etc. And that you need to let yourself heal, don’t beat yourself up!!!

Piper – And finally… Will we be seeing more of Leon in the future?

Kayella – (Blushes and flutters her lashes) Maybe, guess you will have to wait and see lol.

So, there you have it, a little interview to get to know Kayella a bit better… But to really get to know her even more, you’d better buy her book ‘Death’s Carousel’, to see what really made her snap and become a fairground terror, with the voice of an angel.
