Dictionary Definition of a ‘Reader’ – Noun – A person who reads or who is fond of reading.
Reading is a hobby for many, it is an escape from reality when times are hard or we just need to be in someone else’s mindset and world for a while. It can also be a source of inspiration for people that also like to write, hence the motto of, ‘To be able to write, you must read’.
I love reading, a lot!!! And I love reviewing books on my blog but… It got me thinking, I like to read for certain purposes, such as for inspiration for my own writing, to learn something new and to be able to blog and review for content on my blog… But what if there are other reasons and different types of readers! So, I decided to think, research and come up with different types of readers;
- The Book Collector – One of those where they like to collect books to read and to decorate their bookshelves and home with. They may like certain genres, series or not care and will just read anything to broaden their mind and their horizons.
- The Borrower – The person who never buys their own books to read but will pinch books off other people and most probably never give them back, or if they do return them, the do not look the same, they will have been dog eared, dropped in the bathtub or have food stains on them. (Basically a criminal lol).
- Buys only for the Pretty cover or for the collectors Editions – These readers don’t always read every book they buy, sometimes they buy books for display purposes only. They hunt out special editions that are stunning, the covers are unique and pretty and sometimes its due to different countries having different covers and they want them all. It’s a very collector mindset.
- Signed Edition Collector – Remember those people that used to have a notebook to collect famous people’s signatures, well this is kind of the same thing but with multiple books and multiple signed author autographs. Sometimes they don’t even know the author, like the book or the genre, but they just want the signed edition.
- TBR Pile Hoarder (To Be Read) – These readers buy books like they are going out of fashion. They have huge piles of books that they plan to read at some point, but the pile keeps on growing and it would take a few life times to read them all.
- Takes forever to choose a book – They want to find that perfect book, the one that captivates them and compels them into the world of the story… But… No where seems to have the book that fits the bill, or quenches the first, or tames the itch… so they will forever be searching because it doesn’t exist.
- Finishes too soon – They are the ones that will buy a book in the AM and by the PM it is done and dusted and read. They will then cry and feel like they should have taken things slower and got to know the book before rushing to the finish line.
- Turns to the last page to see the ending – These readers are impatient but they also don’t like not knowing what is going to happen, they hate surprises. So they flip to the end of the book, read the last few pages and then start the book. That way nothing can take them by surprise and they have a sense of power over the book.
- Never completes but still buys more – DNF is their game and they don’t feel guilty about it. Did Not Finish is a book phenomenon where people buy books but can’t or won’t finish. Some people feel guilty and force themselves to make it to the end, others do not feel this guilt, the shame!!! So, they throw it in the DNF pile and head out to buy another.
- Lives inside the bookstore – These people are at the bookstore on the daily or weekly. They feel most at home surrounded by books, they take in the intoxicating aroma of fresh pages and curl up in the book corner with the arm chair and just read. They know all the bookstore staff but go for the peace and quiet.
- Bookworm – These people read all the time, they have books in their handbags or rucksacks. They cannot go anywhere without taking a book for backup. They go on holiday and pack a suitcase just for the books. Even their phones have books saved to them on apps. They even walk into lampposts because they do not look up from the book they are reading.
- The eBook reader – These people hold the power of thousands of books in one hand, in one device and all they need is a charger to keep it real.
- The Book Sniffer – Yes, these people are real, it’s not a myth. These people go into bookstores and sniff all the new releases. They will buy a book and breathe in its bookly aroma and they will not care if others look at them weird, because that scent gets them high.
- The Second hand book Adopter – These readers prowl the charity shops and second hand book stalls hidden inside supermarkets and other venues. They hunt for someone else’s trash that becomes their treasure. They refuse to pay full price for a new book and will wait till they see it at the second hand book adoption drive, then once read they discard them back to the book adoption agency and look for their next adoption.
- The Commuter – The person who zones out on the train or on the commute to work, absorbed by the book that calls to them. They can ignore the world around them and some can even read with headphones and music on. They are mystical creatures that still even know when their stop approaches and run for the doors still reading.

There are so many types of reader, but it is fun to deep dive and discover so many.
What type of reader are you? Let me know. (Last image created using WordPress AI)
