Skills… It’s kinda funny really, because when I think of skills, I think of the Sims. I see a little simulated person working hard on something to power up their skill level, to become a master in a certain field and then get to the top of their career ladder and earn mega money… In real life though, this is not entirely true.

People learn skills all the time, but it is very rare that those skills can be put to good use to get you a good job, or get you to a place where money is ok and you can live comfortably. Most people gain skills but end up working a different job due to their own life’s journey and the paths it has taken them.

But… If I had a chance at being able to be like a Sim, a learn a new skill and become the master at it, the skill would have to be… To be able to read music!!!

I love music, I love listening to it, falling into another world with it. For me, music creates imagery in my mind, it creates the stories that I wish to write, the characters come to life for me through music. But, I cannot read it! I have tried, but I am I guess for no other better term, music vocabulary illiterate.

When I was a teenager I learnt to play the drums, a drum kit which was amazing and made me feel alive when I played, but no matter how much my music teacher tried to teach me, I could not get my head around reading musical notes. so instead he had to teach me another way, by showing me the pattern and the tune and for me to copy and replicate it.

I played the drums for quite a while, but in the end I gave up due to some personal reasons, but also the embarrassment of not being able to read from a sheet of music. It meant it took me a little longer to learn a song which was of no use to people who wanted you to be able to read the melody, the beat and or tune and play it there and then almost.

For me this would be the one skill I would love to learn. I would have loved to have been able to create music, play in a band and just read it. It’s frustrating too because I love to read books, and to me, music is a book I cannot read or grasp.
