“It’s October 3rd”, said Cady Heron to Aaron Samuels, when he asked her the date in class in the hit movie Mean Girls. The film is iconic and although it came out back in 2004, it is still really relevant and loved today.
It also features a huge persona of a character which isn’t a human… Which has also become an icon in it’s own right… The Burn Book!!!

The Burn Book is a book that Regina George used to write down all horrible messages and insults about other people, especially other girls inside it. And in the film it ends up making a lot of trouble for the main character Cady Heron, when Regina gets annoyed and uses it as a weapon to make everyone think Cady is the mean one and not her. The book as a prop and similar items like it in movie, film or television terms are called ‘Hero Props’ and it is basically a character that is not a real human character, but a kind of character in it’s own way that can help to drive the story in a certain way. Think of the original ‘Charmed’ series and the new one with their Book of Shadows, that too became a character that helped to move along the storyline and plot, and could also fill in some plot holes or give answers without the characters having to spend time doing research and the storyline becoming boring.
I of course love books and makeup, and although the ‘Burn Book’ is not the nicest book in the pile, it is also a book which I think most girls would love to own. A book where you can be a bitch and moan about other people and how much they have annoyed you, upset you, or wound you up. Obviously that is not something you want other people to read, and thus, a lot of people have a diary, where they can bitch and moan and talk about other things. The Burn Book in my eyes, is just a misunderstood bitchy diary… And although I don’t condone the sorts of things Regina George and co were putting in theirs, sometimes I do feel it is good to have an outlet of sorts. You may love your friends to the moon and back, but sometimes you just need to have a moan and not upset them and sometimes writing it down in your diary is the best way to do this.

The other day I saw that October was on it’s way and October 3rd would soon be here and it is now of course known to be ‘Mean Girls Day’. And as I was Googling the reference I came across this book by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong and it was about the making of Mean Girls. Now I love a good book on behind the scenes and how movies and television shows are made. I mean I loved ‘The Bing Bang Theory’ book by Jessica Radloff for this very purpose! So, I just had to get my paws on it! And as I found this online, a pop up showed me some makeup by ‘Revolution Beauty’ and it was all in the sale and all Mean Girls related. The main star of the show being an eyeshadow palette that looked like the Burn Book! So, again, I just had to have it, especially as I do love a bit of makeup and also makeup that is related to books. I purchased the bits of the collection that were left. Due to Revolution seemingly cutting down on their inventory, it seems that they were selling their old stock and collabs off cheap. Which was great for me as it meant I didn’t feel so bad at buying a book and makeup too.
Now, the book I still haven’t finished yet, but when I do I will of course post a review here on my blog, but for today, to celebrate ‘International Mean Girls Day’ lol, I have decided to show you all the makeup and the book side by side.
As you can see above with the eyeshadow palette that is meant to mimic the Burn Book, it does have the coolest packing with the girly pink of the book and the lettering and the kisses to show what it is, it is mimicking. The Book palette itself feels squishy, and that makes the palette look thicker and more book like in its nature, than rather just a cardboard palette that looks thin and not like a book.

When you open the palette up and look inside you are greeted with a cute mirror so you can use your palette and not have to hold a separate mirror at the same time to apply your eyeshadow look and it has a quote from the film, “So you agree, you think you’re really pretty?” Which gives it such a bitchy Regina George feel to it. It also gives me ‘Jeffree Star’ eyeshadow palette vibes with the size of the eyeshadow pans and the embossed image on some of the shades.

As well as a gorgeous array of eyeshadow shades. Mostly pinks of course to suit the book and the theme, but there are some variations which are not pink. There is one purple shade, one brown shade, one green / mint shade, a black shade, a white shade and one shade which is marbled and looks to be dark maroon and beige come gold. The other nine shades are all a variant of pink, going from lightest pink almost peachy, to the darkest magenta and florescent fuchsia. The names of the shades all correspond to references to the film to such as; “Get in loser” and “I’m a mouse… Duh!” and “October 3rd”. The formula as well of the actual eyeshadows themselves are very pigmented and creamy, they literally glide onto the skin like silk. I was very pleasantly surprise when I tested these out on my arm. The price point of the palette in the sale was great, I paid £6. It’s original price though was £19.99, but in the grand scheme of things and with the packaging design and the formula of the shadows, I think the price of the palette at nearly £20 was quite good value for money but even better at the £6 I coughed up.

There are also some different formula types, there are creamy matte shades, silky smooth shimmers and a gorgeous marble shade which gives such a decadent glow I could see myself using it as highlight as well as an eyeshadow shade. Overall the Burn Book eyeshadow palette is stunning and is very in fitting with the book and the film and I cannot wait to wear it on my face.

Next up was a makeup sponge inside some packing that had a cute pink car on the front and the quote, “Get in loser, we’re going shopping”. Now, makeup sponges are very useful, I use one everyday to apply my foundation and concealer, I guess I’m probably old school because I use a sponge and not brushes. And don’t get me wrong I liked this sponge, it’s spongey and pink but… The price point for me was a little on the ‘Urgh’ side. Originally it was £5.99 which I think is too much just for a sponge, even a pink swirly one, and compared to the palettes price point, it just seemed a bit much. But I paid £3 in the sale, which again, I still think is too much… It’s a sponge. And yes this one feels firm enough to apply my makeup properly, its not too soft and it doesn’t feel like it will eat up too much of my liquid makeup before applying it to my face, but it annoys me when brands do special edition sponges and sell them for loads. And to be honest, even the packaging for this was too much, the box was way bigger than the sponge and could have been smaller. But I guess that is being too nit picky even for me lol.

Lastly in my Revolution x Mean Girls makeup collection is the three lip glosses. They all come in a squeezy tube design with a lid, and a dangling charm of an ‘R’. At first I thought it was all for Regina… Which I thought was a little odd seen as only one of the glosses is named after Regina, the other two are named after Regina’s plastic friends, Gretchen and Karen! But after thinking about it, the ‘R’ stands for Revolution… lol. I know, I don’t know why it took me so long to figure out haha.

There were three glosses in the collection by Revolution, a beigey rose toned gloss which was named “That’s so fetch” and is the Gretchen Gloss. It is classed as a nude peach shade but it does seem to have a pretty pink and orange undertone but is definitely more on the peachy side. It also has a rather sweet scent to it. On the lips it is a rather sticky formula but it is ok, it’s not too uncomfortable but I think if you apply too much it could feel heavy.
The next one was more red toned pink with a pretty bow on the tube, this one was the ‘Karen’ gloss and is classed as a mauve pink cherry. Again same formula and texture but looks pretty on the lips. Both the Gretchen and the Karen glosses are highly pigmented with colour.
The last gloss is of course the Regina gloss! This one has an image of a top with two holes cut out around the boob area, which is of course an iconic scene from the film. This gloss is a nearly clear gloss but it also a cute shimmer to it, almost holographic looking in the tube, but just clear with glitter when applied to the lips, but this one is the one I would wear more often because it could potentially go with any makeup look or fashion look because it is not a solid colour and won’t clash.

The price point of the glosses is ok, originally they were priced at £6.99 each and I only paid £2.80 in their sale. And whilst £7 for these is ok they are cheapy looking plastic tubes with a cheapy charm. I think £4.99 might have been a better original price point and if I had known this existed when it came out, £5 at full price I might have paid, but £7, each I think is a little much and I might have only purchased one and not all three. But, overall the glosses are ok and nice and I will wear them, although I do prefer a lip oil to moisturise my lips but glosses are good for certain looks.
There were other things in this collection that I didn’t manage to get my hands on such as a mouse headband to keep your hair out of your face when applying your makeup and or skincare, and a bright pink makeup bag that has a couple of brushes and clips to clip your hair out the way and there also seemed to be a blush palette, but overall I am happy with the items I got and I will use them all and enjoy using them. The collection I feel is very close to the vibe and feel of the film and my favourite item is of course the Burn Book Palette, I mean, its a book and makeup all in one lol. I have also enjoyed playing with makeup by Revolution, but I do think I’m a little late to the Revolution and Collabs party as they seem to be dumbing down the amount of collabs they have and selling them off cheap.
I hope you enjoyed my review. And P.S. Happy Mean Girls Day.
