I have quite few hobbies… But if I had to choose my tippy top favourite hobby / past time it would have to be… Writing!

I love writing. I have always had quite an imaginative mind, a creative imagination and love to create characters and stories in worlds that do and don’t exist. Hence why this year was the year I decided to finish the book I had started writing last year and to self publish it. It was such an invigorating feeling of holding my very own book in my hands, a book people can buy and read. It is also very scary to have something you have loved and worked hard on be out in the world for people to read and critique. People are not always the nicest, especially when it comes to those of us that have a passion and a hobby but choose to go the indie route such as self publish.

I think writing is my all time favourite hobby because I get to be creative, but because I also get to escape reality. For a long time life was hard for me and my little family. My husband was run over in a hit and run, left for dead on the side of the road, it changed all our lives overnight. He was made disabled, I became not only his wife but his carer. We still had really young children and I was trying to still work, be the only bread winner and look after my family with school runs, play dates, hospital appointments and so on. So writing for me became an escape. Time for just me. A place where I could create characters whose lives were worse or better than mine. Who could try careers I had only dreamt of. Writing for me was a way to be myself and express the crazy inside my mind.

I also love writing because I am very lonely. It’s funny, they say when something traumatic happens to you, you find out who your true friends and family really are. And that is so true. I found when my world changed people would get frustrated with me for not being able to go out more, to not be able to look after their kids anymore, to not be able to work more hours anymore… So they all just turned their backs and left me to fight this battle alone… I literally, have no one. But I’m ok with that, I have my husband, my kids, my cats and now my dog and my characters.

Writing became my solace… My characters became my friends. And even now to this day I feel my characters are more like pieces of me and my friends and acquaintances then any other human.

So yeah, for me writing is the best. It is my favourite hobby. Then after that comes reading and gaming, especially playing games like the Sims!
